We are now open for the summer
Munkholmen is the name of a small island just outside the city of Trondheim. The island holds a rich history, being a former execution ground, monastery, prison, fortress and defence station during World War II. Today the island is a popular hangout site and bathing spot both for locals and tourists in summer time.
From May until September the boats depart from Munkegata 70 in Trondheim on a regular basis. Once on the island, visitors can take a guided tour (in English and Norwegian) or stroll freely around. There is a café and bar located on the island serving warm lunches, various cakes, ice cream, coffee and other beverages.

Tickets for the shuttle boat can be bought in on the boat or in the link below.
Departure time every whole hour from Munkegata 70, Trondheim. Return from Munkholmen 15 minutes past every hour.

GUIDED TOUR
During the summer months, there is the possibility of guided tour on Munkholmen.
Guiding every day at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. 135 NOK per person. Tickets are sold in the restaurant.

Where can boat tickets be purchased?
Tickets can be purchased in advance. The ticket is valid for both the outbound and return trip.
Is it possible to book a guided tour at Munkholmen?
Yes, absolutely! At the moment, guided tours must be booked in advance. Please contact us by email if you would like to arrange a tour.
Is it possible to book guided tours for groups?
Of course! We have guided tours every day at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. For larger groups, contact us by email, and we’ll arrange it for you.
Is the boat wheelchair accessible?
There is access and space for wheelchairs onboard. We are also happy to assist with boarding and disembarking. Please note that weather conditions may affect accessibility. Feel free to contact us in advance.
Is it possible to bring a stroller on the boat to Munkholmen?
Yes, that is absolutely fine. Please note that accessibility may be somewhat limited in certain areas of the island.
What about four-legged friends? Are dogs allowed on the boat?
Absolutely! Dogs travel free of charge on the boat. Please be mindful of wildlife and the surroundings. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed inside the restaurant.
Is food served at Munkholmen?
The café and bar is open during daytime hours from 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM every day. If needed we are open until 5:30 PM. You’ll find a selection of warm and cold lunch dishes, cakes, ice cream, coffee, and other beverages. Are you visiting as a group and interested in lunch? Feel free to contact us in advance, and we’ll arrange it for you.
Is camping or overnight stays in tents allowed at Munkholmen?
No, overnight stays of any kind are not permitted at Munkholmen.
Is Munkholmen open during the winter season?
No, Munkholmen is closed during the winter season.
